Applying for a Home with Us
You can apply for a home with us personally, over the telephone and in writing by requesting and completing our housing application form.

Once we receive your completed application, we will:

  • Assess you in accordance with our Lettings Policy
  • Inform you of the outcome of your application within 21 working days
  • Place you on our waiting list, if you meet our re-housing criteria
  • Offer you a suitable property in the area of your choice as soon as one is available

Please note that we have a huge waiting list, and most applicants have to wait longer than a year to secure a suitable property. You will be advised of other local Registered Social Landlords who may be able to help you. In addition, it is in your interest to widen your areas of choice as well as to register with the Local Authority’s internet-based lettings system, Homehunter.

If you wish to apply on-line, please click here.

Applicants on our Waiting List are allocated homes through one of the following routes:

General Route

The general route is a point-based system. Applicants will be considered for this route if they have multiple housing needs and require priority attention on our Waiting List. The Priority Need categories mentioned above will be our reference.

The General Route allows us to allocate a number of points to a range of housing needs. The points are then added up to make a total, and this number determines an applicant’s position on the General Route section of our Waiting List.

Broadly speaking, the higher the score, the more quickly the applicant can expect to be offered a home. Other factors will affect this too, however, such as the applicant’s choice of neighbourhood and the number of properties available there to let.

If applicants have the same number of points, then we will use the date they were registered on our waiting list to accord them priority.

Community Route

This route is for people who want to move into another community, for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • To give and/or receive support in long term family / extended family situations
  • To be close to a community in which they are active
  • To take up an offer of employment or a voluntary position in a key worker role
  • To have access to medical or other specific community support

Applicants applying through this route are asked to give details to support their application, including their reasons for choosing this area and details of their local connections.

Re-housing through this route is in date order – i.e. the people who have been registered longest on the Community Section of the Waiting List will have priority.

Economic Route

This route is open to the following people:

  • In employment who are outside the Priority Needs Categories
  • With private income / savings who can afford to rent
  • Moving to take up employment (both in a key worker role or a non-key worker role)

Rehousing through this route is in date order – i.e. the people who have been registered longest on the Economic Section of the Waiting List will have priority.

Further Considerations

We aim to give our customers real choice as to the type and location of their future home, whilst balancing this with our commitment to re-housing those people in priority need. To help people exercise choice, we are active partners in the Council’s Homehunter Scheme. This means that some of our properties will continue to be advertised regularly through this “choice-based” lettings scheme. You can obtain more details about how the scheme works, and how you can take part in it, from our offices.

Overall, we aim to keep our properties empty for as short a period as possible. This will be done by providing a responsive, informative and fair lettings service in dealing with applicants for housing. We are keen to promote sustainable tenancies, community cohesion and pro-social behaviour on all our schemes.
