Definition of Domestic Violence

  • Physical, psychological, sexual or financial violence
  • Takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship
  • A pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour
  • Gender specific - usually the perpetrator is a man.  

Statistical Evidence

  • Any woman can experience domestic violence
  • 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence over their lifetimes (Council of Europe)  
  • Between 6-10% of women suffer domestic violence in a given year (Council of Europe)
  • An estimated 635,000 incidents of domestic violence in England and Wales in 2001/02 (British Crime Survey)
  • Every minute in the UK, the Police receive a call from the public for assistance for domestic violence - an estimated 1,300 calls each day or over 570,000 each year.
